Abstract

From the perspective of the service team:

Over the past six years, the University of Manchester has developed a rich set of publication data in Pure, with high quality metadata records for over 180,000 journal articles alone. Within Pure, this data is valuable, but when combined with data from other sources, its potential use cases multiply.

The OACP enables Library staff to annotate this rich publication data with open access compliance information for multiple funder and institutional policies, and information that is crucial for internal workflows. The ability to combine this data with feeds from external data sources a dashboard that provides a holistic view of how open access is being achieved at Manchester.

The resulting dataset can then be used to drive decision-making. It shines a light on parts of the University where advocacy should be targeted and shows us where engagement is high.

From the perspective of the technical team:

As an embedded software development team within one of UK’s largest research libraries, we have been developing innovative research support and administration software for over ten years including the OACP. The recently released OACPv2 has simplified a number of manual processes for library staff including

• Minimising the need for manual data lookup and data entry, by automatically retrieving data using Pure’s publication and journal web services. The application data is kept in sync with Pure data using both a daily and on demand sync

• Automatically retrieving embargo information from Sherpa/ Romeo APIs

• Using Scholarcy APIs to analyse papers and retrieve summary information , which has been especially useful for tweeting.

• Automatically identifying potentially published records and DOIs using Crossref APIs; this information has helped the team to maintain the Pure record with up-to-date information.

• Producing compliance reports using Power BI; these can be shared with Research managers and funders.

The purpose of these many integrations is to enable staff to work on one application rather than accessing multiple applications in order to complete tasks.

What next?

The code is open-source, and we are looking for potential collaborators to help us continue to develop the project.
