Abstract

Working in research information systems management for over a decade I have seen the impact that subject matter experts, system designers and organisations have had on the development of robust and sharable research outcomes data models. We are in a position today where we are able to harvest high quality, plentiful and (mostly) consistent meta data about research publications across multiple platforms.

In the same timeframe requirements on researchers and institutions to collate and report a wider set of research activity and impact information have arisen and while Research Information Management Systems have continued to evolve to meet these requirements they are disparate, often incompatible and almost always require manual (re)entry of data.

Why do such data defy standardisation and classification, what could we achieve if such data models were developed, and how could we work together to start to make this happen?
